2 refugees who have been hosted in Dorking would like to settle here and so we are looking for more permanent accommodation for them. If you are aware of any affordable apartments that they could rent, please do get in contact. Both we have known for a long time and can vouch for. Secondly we have a couple of refugees in Dorking who are currently learning to drive. Having passed their theory, they are now taking driving lessons but would benefit from someone willing to take them out and practice. If you are willing to ensure them on your car and arrange a time to take them out, please do get in contact. One is female and would ideally prefer another female to take her out practicing. Saturday English Speaking Cafe recommenced this Saturday with about 15 of us in total. Conversations were had, games were played, - good times.
English as a Secondary Language classes are starting again this week (commencing 9/9/19) on a Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 - 11:30. If you or if you know anybody who you think would benefit, then please get in contact with us.
Here is a message from DRS supporter Jasmine, who helped us by offering free lessons here in Dorking before her present trip to Lebanon. If you can help her with her fundraising project, please do! I have spent the last six weeks volunteering teaching English with an organisation called MAPS, who is working in Lebanon with Syrian refugee children and adults who no one else is helping. They provide essential services including healthcare, emergency aid, and education. I witnessed suffering and hardship which I think is unimaginable to a lot of us who are lucky enough to live in the West, and yet these children and adults still have hope, and are working desperately to improve their situation. MAPS helps their children to achieve this by providing education to children who would otherwise recieve no schooling. Heartbreakingly, funding to help Syrian refugees is being reduced rapidly, and MAPS currently doesn't have enough funding to carry on this essential work. Below is a link to their fundraising page and I urge you to donate to all this amazing charity to continue to provide education to desperate children.
